Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary with barely 25 square kilometers, which is the first bird sanctuary of Kerala, is also one of the most popular ones in the country. The name refers to a level area of forested terrain. How appropriate a description for such a mystical location!
Dr. Salim Ali, a world-renowned ornithologist, founded the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary in 1983 and is directly responsible for the wonders on show there. His famed 1930s survey of Travancore resulted in the establishment of this modern-day bird sanctuary. He highlighted that the area was rich in bird species and should be transformed into a sanctuary to preserve it. The more than 300 species that live in these tropical and deciduous forests attest to his tremendous vision.
The Sri Lankan Frogmouth, Racket-tailed Drongo, Bronzed Drongo, White-bellied Treepie, Shama, Yellow-browed Bulbul, Rufous Babbler, Malabar Parakeet, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher, and Malabar Grey Hornbill may all be found here. Beautiful teak, rosewood, and mahogany plantations can be seen here. It also has more than 28 mammal species and nine reptile species.
